A nice romance to curl up with, May 15, 2009
By G. Ashby - See all my reviews

This book was well-written, well thought-out, and very entertaining. It was a nice, old fashioned romance without the sleeze of today. There was a plot and a story line that was gripping and enough action to hold my attention. For all the romantics in the world, this is a nice book to curl up with to take you away for awhile.

Rachel Rager Biography

Plunged into a musical family at birth, Rachel Rager was exposed to the excitement and magic of musical theater throughout her childhood. Starry-eyed, she attended college musical rehearsals with her pianist mother – imagining herself as the heroine in the spotlight – becoming a hopeless romantic from the start. Though Rachel’s own natural musical gifts motivated her through college and she now holds a vocal performance degree in operatic singing, she has loved writing sweet romance novels for over six years. Creative writing has served as a beautiful escape from the emotional rigors of raising her family.

Rachel published her first novel, By Love or By Sea in April of 2009 and continues to write sweet romance novels. She currently lives in Casper, Wyoming with her handsome husband – the love of her life – where she enjoys curling up by a blazing fire with a good book, getting her own creative thoughts on paper, and singing until the coyotes start howling. She loves picnics in the park and being the mom to three future starlets.

The Man from Shenandoah by Marsha Ward

Carl Owen returns from the Civil War to find the family farm destroyed, his favorite brother dead, food scarce, and his father determined to leave the Shenandoah Valley to build a cattle empire in Colorado Territory. Crossing the continent, Carl falls in love with his brother's fiance' while set to wed another girl, but he might lose everything if the murderous outlaw Berto Acosta has his way. Carl battles a band of outlaws, a prairie fire, blizzards, a trackless waterless desert, and his own brother—all for the hand of feisty Ellen Bates.

"A book to prize, and not only for its gritty realism, exciting action, and compelling characters. The story further engages us by examining the ties that hold family and community together. Not many Westerns do that. " Heartily recommended!" C.K. Crigger, author of the Boothenay Irons Gunsmith series, Western Writers Newsletter, Nov.

A Western That is Truly West, March 5, 2003
By D. Davis (PAYSON, AZ USA)

I had nearly given up on reading Westerns as the newer ones I have read present such modern morals and language. Ms. Ward uses the language of the class & region, which makes The Man from Shenandoah so pleasing. Ms. Ward gives us joyous times but doesn't pass lightly over the hardships either. The author draws a character in such human warmth and depth that you have no trouble remembering who is whom. I don't know how a woman can write so well from a man's viewpoint; but, as she illustrates so well, men didn't understand women in the old West any better than they do now, but we women are another story!

Marsha Ward has a way with dialogue that eases us into familiarity with Carl Owen, the book's main character. His thoughts and words flow so clearly that we come to know him as a common man with a sense of humor. Carl is not given to flowery speeches. He can be a complex man who at times makes some pretty funny mistakes, and he doesn't like to apologize for them. Carl's values and his honor cause him no end of conflict with his family and others throughout his story. Often a western (especially one with romance included) lacks a deep feeling of family. I liked this one because the main character was not the 'loner with no family to teach him love and values' hero. The better part of the characters in this novel were members of warm, loving, laughing and arguing families. It was a joy to get to know them.

Ms. Ward paints vivid night skies, warm sun on your face and makes you wish you could lie down to contemplate the clouds in a meadow surrounded by quakies (Aspen trees to those not native to the Rockies). Colorado, Nevada, Utah and of course Arizona have been my playgrounds all my life and the journey into past memories was achingly sweet. A young girl threw her arms up over her head and whirled around in a meadow full of wildflowers and cried "I love you, Colorado, you're beautiful." This Colorado girl was so homesick she cried too - tears.

Ms. Ward's characters worked `danged hard' and they went down to the 'crick' to get water. Arizonan's give me such strange looks when I talk about the dry cricks here.

Well, human nature being what it is, there were people I loved and people I could do without but loved to hate. I was also a bit humbled by the women and yes, I would wish to be more like Ellen Bates myself. Now give us our sequel - it's so hard to wait!

I can't leave you without also mentioning that the cover is to die for. Yummy!

Rousing western fiction, November 30, 2003
By Carol Crigger (Spokane Valley, WA)

When James Owen's fiancee up and marries his brother, James's rage drives him from his home. He sets out for Colorado, looking to work in the mines. He makes the mistake, however, of stopping in Pueblo City where trouble finds him. Set upon, shot, then jailed, an old family "friend" bails him out. The help is not free, and James must work himself clear of these entanglements.

On his way over the mountains at last, he finds the body of wealthy Mexican. A letter explains that the dead man was going to Leones to acquire a bride. James has found an expensive bride gift on the body and determines he must take it, along with an explanation, to the woman.
At the same time, events have sent Amparo Garces y Martinez on a journey from Santa Fe into Colorado where an arranged marriage awaits her. Arriving at the mission, she waits there for her husband to claim her. However, it is James Owen who arrives. In a moment of chivalry, James marries the girl with the intention of taking her back to Santa Fe. Naturally, his plans go awry. First, although he fights his feelings, he falls in love with her. Second, Amparo willingly, joyously, returns his love, and somewhere between here and there, James decides they should go home to his family.

While on the trail, upon reaching Trinidad, they are swept up in a fight between Mexican and white battling factions. Barricaded in the town mercantile, they hope to avoid the trouble--but trouble comes to them. Caught in a crossfire, Amparo is shot, and now James takes up a trail of vengeance against the killers of his lost love.

Ride To Raton is the action packed story of a conflicted man who strives always to do the right thing. The story will catch at your heart and stay with you long after you put the book down. Highly recommended for all fans of western lore.

After fifty plus years in the city, Marsha now makes her home in a tiny hamlet under Central Arizona's magnificent Mogollon Rim. When she is not writing, she loves to spoil her grandchildren, travel, give talks, meet readers, and sign books.

Great Read!, September 9, 2009
By S. Marie Lundeen "Luv2Read"

My husband, who never reads book, read this book before I got a chance to even pick it up. I knew it had to be good if he couldn't put it down long enough for me to read it too.

"Altared Plans" is about a young woman by the name of Caitlyn, who arrived at the Temple on the day of her wedding to find out that the love of her life was on an airplane to be with someone else. Devastated and torn apart she vowed she would never fall in love.

Upon returning to BYU, she is called to be the mom of her FHE group where she meets the father, Travis. Refusing to let herself fall in love again, she tags Travis as "annoying" but finds that she can't keep her mind off him and concentrate on her studies. Can her roommate, Brittany, help her to see that Travis is not like her first love? In order to find out, you need to read this book.

Out of 5 stars, I give this book a 6!

Rebecca Talley Biography

Published Works: Grasshopper Pie and Heaven Scent.

Bio: I was born in Santa Barbara, California. My younger sister and I were raised in Santa Barbara by our maternal grandparents. I spent countless hours playing at the beach. I loved swimming in the ocean, collecting shells, and digging in the sand. One of my favorite memories is riding my pony along the shore with the surf spraying my feet. I still love the moist sea air.

While I was a teenager, I performed as a flamenco dancer in parades and on stage for the Old Spanish Days Fiesta celebration that occurs every August in Santa Barbara. I played basketball in high school and was named Most Inspirational Player.

After graduating from high school, I attended BYU. I had a hard time adjusting to the snow and cold winters, but I had the time of my life living in Deseret Towers, Centennial Apartments, and Riviera Apartments.

While attending BYU, I met my sweetheart, Del, who was born and raised in a rural area of Colorado. We were married in 1985, after my junior year at BYU. I graduated from BYU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications.

Shortly after graduation, my first child, a son, was born while we lived in Utah. My daughter was born two years later.

We then moved to New Mexico for five years before moving out to rural Colorado. We've now been blessed with ten wildly creative children whose talents amaze me and bless my life.

Besides kids, we've also raised cows, horses, rabbits, goats, and sheep. We currently have a small herd of goats and a llama we named Tina (yes, my children have watched Napoleon Dynamite too many times!).

I love living in the country with my big family. I love watching my kids play together, have fun, and develop their talents. We have a performance in front of our fireplace almost every night where our kids sing, do cheers, or act out a play they've written. I love the peace and quiet (okay, maybe quiet isn't quite the word) of the country and having the opportunity to raise animals.

With all the activities, school events, and utter chaos that sometimes rains down upon us, I have to work hard to find time to write. But, I've discovered that because it's important to me, I've found ways to work it in. I've had stories published in the Friend, Story Friends, Our Little Friend, and Stories for Children. I am also the author of a children's picture book, Grasshopper Pie.

Love in Bleak Times, May 22, 2009
By Story Circle Book Reviews

The bleak yet beautiful land of western New Mexico is the setting for a love story in a rugged and often lonely time--the tough years of the Great Depression. City-raised, culture-loving, impoverished Ruth sought security and a home when she agreed to marry Harlan Reynolds. When the couple moved to Harlan's new job at the Diamond E ranch, Ruth found the land as bleak as her marriage. She took her car and ran away to Las Cruces, but didn't make it far before she found herself stuck in a deep and isolated arroyo. Enter Heck Benham, Diamond E cowhand, who after a spectacular display of horse-handling rescued the lady. They both felt the spark, and here, the story takes off.

In her dedication of the book to her mother, author Liz Adair explains the novel is a fictionalized account of a long secret family story: an uncle fell in love and ran away with a married woman in that long ago New Mexico.

The story Adair tells is a love story, but it is also one of struggle. Struggles with the land, the hard times, and, mostly, two very different people who, in spite of their love, want very different things.

Heck is content with his life, his horses, his home, however modest, and his (eventual) wife. Ruth longs for what she had--and more. More culture, more money, more people. Through the years, they stay together, sometimes one yielding, sometimes the other.

Adair spins a fascinating and easy to read story. All of her characters, not only Heck and Ruth, ring true. Moreover, she has a fine eye and ear for both the land and the times. I grew up in the country not far from the setting of this story, and, like Adair, I grew up hearing stories of the Great Depression. She has skillfully captured both.

This is a story to enjoy, but also one to learn from.

A must read Christmas story, October 27, 2008
By Florida Reader "Judith" (Florida)

This is a book that most likely every person will want to call their own and pass on to future generations. The Santa Letters will surely become a family heirloom because of the warmth, love and inspiration it contains. Christmas has become so commercialized over the years that the true meaning has so easily been forgotten. This new book reminds us of family traditions, the warmth and comfort of friends and family, and those around us needing a lift. Written with great wisdom to uplift and inspire.

The Santa Letters is a beautiful story about how the lives of Emma Jensen and her children were changed overnight by the death of her husband, William, killed by a hit and run driver. As Christmas Eve approaches, marking the anniversary of his death, she finds herself sinking into a deep depression where nothing can reach her - not her job, not the love of her family, and especially not the season. Her youngest child, McKenna, is the only one who still believes in the magic of Christmas, and in miracles. When an ornate letter and mysterious package appears on their doorstep and one continues to arrive every day, Emma and her sons begin to experience the same magical journey to Christmas that McKenna feels and believes in. As the meaning of the letters unfolds, the whole family comes to realize that William is still playing a part in their lives and the joy of Christmas need not be forever lost.
Read this one, if you read no other for this season!

Trouble with Family Home Evening?

Check out Famous Family Nights (great for gifts too) and you'll come away inspired and motivated.

Author Anne Bradshaw approached dozens of favorite LDS entertainers, authors, musicians, etc. and asked them to share their experiences with Family Home Evening. The stories will have you laughing one minute, then crying the next. Many are touching, and some are outrageous. But in the end, you'll come away with a renewed resolve to hold consistent Family Home Evenings and most of all, it's okay to be creative (like best-selling author, Rachel Ann Nunes), or it's okay to send the kids to their rooms after (like Best of State Educator, Lu Ann Staheli). And sometimes FHE can be used for simple teaching moments, such as encouraging the children to flush the toilet (as told by Josi S. Kilpack, well-known mystery writer).

Stories are shared by Alan Osmond, Carol Lynn Pearson, Annette Lyon, Bruce Summerhays, Susan Easton Black, GG Vandagriff, and Jennie Hansen to name a few.

I echo George Dyer's (international opera singer) sentiment, "After reading the first few stories in this book I let out a sigh of relief and a chuckle as I realized my family wasn't so dysfunctional when it came to family home evening experiences after all!"

Anne Bradshaw Biography

Published Works: Famous Family Nights, Terracotta Summer, its sequel Chamomile Winter, and Please, No Zits! & Other Short Stories for LDS Youth.

Bio: Anne was born in Caernarvon, Wales, to London's Eve and Fred Tozer. She grew up in Cheshire, England. After marrying Bob Bradshaw, she lived in Daventry, Leiston, Southport, Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield. The Bradshaws currently live in the USA and have four children, David, Linda, Jeff and Pete; and many grandchildren.

Anne's hobbies include family, walking, computers, herbal gardening, aromatherapy, photography, and genealogy.

"I've had some great experiences researching ancestors," she says. "I descend from people named Tozer, Barclay, Styles, Pattison, Guppy, Whall, Burgess, Tibbs, Minter, Scarfe, Godfrey, and Short, to name a few. The singer, Phil Collins, is in there too, on the Tozer line. He's my Dad's cousin's son."

While living in England, Anne sent articles and stories about British youth to the Church magazine, The New Era, a high quality glossy magazine with worldwide circulation. She also contributed Ensign British Isles Insert articles about members from the United Kingdom. Since living in America, Anne has authored four published books; co-authored two screenplays and two non-fiction books; and written countless articles.

"Writing is an exciting and satisfying experience," Anne says, "and is something I've wanted to do since childhood. I've kept a box of ideas and jottings for a long time, knowing one day they would get into books. And they did."

Anne's favorite things include walking in the rain on fresh cut grass; watching crashing waves before a storm; and sitting by a log fire on frosty winter nights.

Anne dislikes clusters of empty, tangled coat hangers that refuse to disengage; loud, fast-spoken TV ads; and anything cruel, unkind, unjust, or prejudiced.

Below are Nadine Drommond and Carolyn Croxton, who introduced The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints into Anne's life in 1964.

Forged in the Refiner's Fire by Candace E. Salima

Why do bad things happen? Is there a purpose when we face a severe trial? As mortals, we can be compared to ore, such as gold and silver. Ore that is unrefined is generally impure and undesirable. Only ore that is crushed-and then refined by fire-becomes beautiful, pure, precious and valuable.

This book was written to help you see the results of the Ultimate Refiner, the Lord, in your own life. Within these pages, people from all walks of life share their stories of triumph over tragedy. More importantly, they reveal how they were strengthened as they passed through the Refiner's fire.

They became more precious, and so can you.

Candace E. Salima Biography

Published Works: Forged in the Refiner's Fire, 13 and 0: Reflections of Champions, Out of the Shadows...Into the Light, Policosanol (Health), and Oregano (Health)

Bio: Publisher, Author and Public Speaker, Candace E. Salima was born right smack dab in the middle of twelve children. In a family comprised of his, mine and ours, Candace can barely remember a time when reading wasn't an integral part of her life. Her love of books, reading and writing, was born of hearing her mother read nightly from the James Herriot series about a veterinarian's mishaps in the British countryside. She thrived in a family of readers, began writing original stories at the age of eleven and has never looked back.

The daughter of a father who survived the invasion of Hitler's war machine in his homeland and a mother who is an often controversial conservative columnist, Candace spent her childhood on the back of a horse or trudging through the mountains and valleys of the American west. Born in California, she lived in Nebraska, Montana, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico . . . all before she was twelve-years-old. As an adult she lived in Idaho, Wyoming, Arizona, and another short stint in California before making her home in Utah.

She met her sweetheart at Brigham Young University in 1983. Ten years later she appeared on the Phil Donahue Show in defense of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which precipitated a reunion with him. In 1995, Alvin and Candace were married in the Bountiful Temple and settled in Utah Valley. Unable to have children, Alvin and Candace shower their love and attention on their nieces and nephews.

In the course of her life, Candace has been a reporter, a writer of health booklets, a screenwriter, and a teacher. Her philosophy in life is simple . . . everything can be turned into a good story. Hence her nine day rafting trip down the Colorado River, hiking the Colorado Rockies, or horseback riding in the northern Wyoming Grand Teton mountains. A love of BYU football, basketball, swimming, movies, plays, concerts and socializing with family and friends round out her life. All this, and she still prefers to be curled up on her couch with a good book, a cup of hot chocolate and a blustery Winnie-the-Pooh day brewing outside.

Welcome to "Show Me a Story"

Welcome to the Show Me a Story blog where you will find book trailers, books and reviews, as well as purchase links, of the LDStorymakers authors. LDStorymakers, an authors association, is a collection of 99 LDS authors who have published books in either the regional or national markets.

You can find what you're looking for by clicking on any of the Labels. They will be categorized according to author names, bios, about the book, reviews and book trailers. Easy to locate, read and fall in love with the work of some of the best writers in the industry.

From the LDStorymakers site: LDStorymakers (pronounced "LDS Story Makers") started as an online e-mail group, the brainchild of best-selling author Rachel Ann Nunes. Originally called ldssmallpresswriters, our group was designed as a home for published writers who were associated with small publishers—particularly those associated with the LDS market. From the comfort of their own homes, our members could offer help and seek advice from each other, polish their writing skills, and socialize with other authors who knew the ropes.

Within six months of its October 2002 founding, our group had grown to nearly twenty members, representing a wide variety of experience, genres, and market savvy. Although membership was small, we spanned the world, reaching as far as New Zealand and encompassing a potpourri of talent and lifestyles.

In the fall of 2003, we changed the name of our group to LDStorymakers to reflect our religious affiliation and the high ethical values we each strive to associate with our writing.

In no time at all, LDStorymakers had grown from a gaggle of strangers who knew very little about each other, to a gathering place for friends. Membership is open to all LDS published authors who meet our joining guidelines. (Click here to go to our Yahoo group site.)

We sponsor gatherings that benefit writers and readers alike. Our first event was an Authors Extravaganza in Sanpete County, Utah, at the Ephraim Public Library, where nine authors told about their writing life, their books, and how they got published. Door prizes and refreshments enlivened the proceedings. 70 readers attended to meet with their favorite author and stock up on winter reading material. Since then we have conducted several Extravaganzas and other signing events, with great success.

A Writers Conference was added to the mix in the spring of 2004. It was so successful that it has become a sought-after annual event. (Click here to learn more about our next Writers Conference.)

After our first Writers Conference, we organized a sister group to LDStorymakers, named after the theme of that 2004 conference: Authors Incognito. This online support group provides the same kind of support, comraderee, and information as our main group, but is designed specifically for aspiring writers and writers who have yet to be published. This dynamic group now boasts a membership of over 200. The only requirement for becoming a member of Authors Incognito is attendance at an LDStorymakers Writers Conference.

We also sponsor other events and activies, such as our Literacy Nights for Relief Society meetings. We produce a quarterly New Releases Newsletter for subscribers and fans of LDStorymakers (Click here for more information). And we're planning a Writers Cruise in the near future.

It has also been our great honor and pleasure to sponsor and host the Whitney Awards Academy, which has rapidly become THE award to receive in the LDS community. Books are nominated throughout the year by readers, then voted on by retail stores, publishers, authors, and other writing professionals. Awards are given in various genres, as well as a Best of the Year and Best by a New Author. (Click here for complete information about the Whitney Awards.) The Whitney Awards Academy is an independent subsidiary of LDStorymakers, Inc.

So sit back, enjoy and browse through this incredible catalog of books, book trailers and reviews.
