Ashby - See all my reviews

This book was well-written, well thought-out, and very entertaining. It was a nice, old fashioned romance without the sleeze of today. There was a plot and a story line that was gripping and enough action to hold my attention. For all the romantics in the world, this is a nice book to curl up with to take you away for awhile.

See all 6 Reviews

Paperback: 206 pages
Publisher: Cedar Fort, Inc.; 1 edition (April 15, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1599552213
ISBN-13: 978-1599552217
Product Dimensions: 8.4 x 5.4 x 0.6 inches
Shipping Weight: 8 ounces (View shipping rates and policies)
Average Customer Review: 4.8 out of 5 stars (6 customer reviews)
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #1,672,153 in Books

Purchase By Love or By SeaUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783129098248200920.post-66637446588274511352009-11-14T15:56:00.002-07:002009-11-14T16:31:38.482-07:00Rachel Rager Biography
Plunged into a musical family at birth, Rachel Rager was exposed to the excitement and magic of musical theater throughout her childhood. Starry-eyed, she attended college musical rehearsals with her pianist mother – imagining herself as the heroine in the spotlight – becoming a hopeless romantic from the start. Though Rachel’s own natural musical gifts motivated her through college and she now holds a vocal performance degree in operatic singing, she has loved writing sweet romance novels for over six years. Creative writing has served as a beautiful escape from the emotional rigors of raising her family.

Rachel published her first novel, By Love or By Sea in April of 2009 and continues to write sweet romance novels. She currently lives in Casper, Wyoming with her handsome husband – the love of her life – where she enjoys curling up by a blazing fire with a good book, getting her own creative thoughts on paper, and singing until the coyotes start howling. She loves picnics in the park and being the mom to three future starlets.

Website: www.rachelrager.com
Email Rachel

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783129098248200920.post-16273665088526512382009-11-14T09:16:00.009-07:002009-11-14T14:33:26.987-07:00The Man from Shenandoah by Marsha Ward

Carl Owen returns from the Civil War to find the family farm destroyed, his favorite brother dead, food scarce, and his father determined to leave the Shenandoah Valley to build a cattle empire in Colorado Territory. Davis (PAYSON, AZ USA)

I had nearly given up on reading Westerns as the newer ones I have read present such modern morals and language. Ms. Ward uses the language of the class & region, which makes The Man from Shenandoah so pleasing. Ms. Ward gives us joyous times but doesn't pass lightly over the hardships either. The author draws a character in such human warmth and depth that you have no trouble remembering who is whom. I don't know how a woman can write so well from a man's viewpoint; but, as she illustrates so well, men didn't understand women in the old West any better than they do now, but we women are another story!

Marsha Ward has a way with dialogue that eases us into familiarity with Carl Owen, the book's main character. His thoughts and words flow so clearly that we come to know him as a common man with a sense of humor. Carl is not given to flowery speeches. He can be a complex man who at times makes some pretty funny mistakes, and he doesn't like to apologize for them. Carl's values and his honor cause him no end of conflict with his family and others throughout his story. Often a western (especially one with romance included) lacks a deep feeling of family. I liked this one because the main character was not the 'loner with no family to teach him love and values' hero. The better part of the characters in this novel were members of warm, loving, laughing and arguing families. It was a joy to get to know them.

Ms. Ward paints vivid night skies, warm sun on your face and makes you wish you could lie down to contemplate the clouds in a meadow surrounded by quakies (Aspen trees to those not native to the Rockies). Colorado, Nevada, Utah and of course Arizona have been my playgrounds all my life and the journey into past memories was achingly sweet. A young girl threw her arms up over her head and whirled around in a meadow full of wildflowers and cried "I love you, Colorado, you're beautiful." This Colorado girl was so homesick she cried too - tears.

Ms. Ward's characters worked `danged hard' and they went down to the 'crick' to get water. Arizonan's give me such strange looks when I talk about the dry cricks here.

Well, human nature being what it is, there were people I loved and people I could do without but loved to hate. I was also a bit humbled by the women and yes, I would wish to be more like Ellen Bates myself. Now give us our sequel - it's so hard to wait!

I can't leave you without also mentioning that the cover is to die for. Yummy!

Read all 10 customer reviews

Paperback: 246 pages
Publisher: IUniverse (January 2003)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0595263089
ISBN-13: 978-0595263080
Product Dimensions: 9 x 6 x 0.6 inches
Shipping Weight: 13.1 ounces (View shipping rates and policies)
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #561,584 in Books

Purchase The Man from Shenandoah

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783129098248200920.post-87376895486287586492009-11-14T09:12:00.002-07:002009-11-14T14:35:55.864-07:00Ride to Raton by Marsha Ward

After losing the heart of his fiance' to his brother, James Owen leaves home to make a new life for himself. He sets out for Colorado, looking to work in the mines. He makes the mistake, however, of stopping in Pueblo City where trouble finds him. Set upon, shot, then jailed, an old family "friend" bails him out. The help is not free, and James must work himself clear of these entanglements.

On his way over the mountains at last, he finds the body of wealthy Mexican. A letter explains that the dead man was going to Leones to acquire a bride. James has found an expensive bride gift on the body and determines he must take it, along with an explanation, to the woman.
At the same time, events have sent Amparo Garces y Martinez on a journey from Santa Fe into Colorado where an arranged marriage awaits her. Arriving at the mission, she waits there for her husband to claim her. However, it is James Owen who arrives. In a moment of chivalry, James marries the girl with the intention of taking her back to Santa Fe. Naturally, his plans go awry. First, although he fights his feelings, he falls in love with her. Second, Amparo willingly, joyously, returns his love, and somewhere between here and there, James decides they should go home to his family.

While on the trail, upon reaching Trinidad, they are swept up in a fight between Mexican and white battling factions. Marie Lundeen "Luv2Read"

My husband, who never reads book, read this book before I got a chance to even pick it up. I knew it had to be good if he couldn't put it down long enough for me to read it too.

"Altared Plans" is about a young woman by the name of Caitlyn, who arrived at the Temple on the day of her wedding to find out that the love of her life was on an airplane to be with someone else. Devastated and torn apart she vowed she would never fall in love.

Upon returning to BYU, she is called to be the mom of her FHE group where she meets the father, Travis. Refusing to let herself fall in love again, she tags Travis as "annoying" but finds that she can't keep her mind off him and concentrate on her studies. Can her roommate, Brittany, help her to see that Travis is not like her first love? In order to find out, you need to read this book.

Out of 5 stars, I give this book a 6!

Paperback: 250 pages
Publisher: Bonneville Books; 1 edition (June 15, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1599552809
ISBN-13: 978-1599552804
Product Dimensions: 8.4 x 5.4 x 0.9 inches
Shipping Weight: 11.2 ounces (View shipping rates and policies)
Average Customer Review: 5.0 out of 5 stars See all reviews
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #222,966 in Books

Purchase Altared Plans
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783129098248200920.post-30569812464895692542009-11-14T07:08:00.000-07:002009-11-14T09:13:02.571-07:00Rebecca Talley Biography
Published Works: Grasshopper Pie and Heaven Scent.

Bio: I was born in Santa Barbara, California. My younger sister and I were raised in Santa Barbara by our maternal grandparents. I spent countless hours playing at the beach. I loved swimming in the ocean, collecting shells, and digging in the sand. One of my favorite memories is riding my pony along the shore with the surf spraying my feet. I still love the moist sea air.

While I was a teenager, I performed as a flamenco dancer in parades and on stage for the Old Spanish Days Fiesta celebration that occurs every August in Santa Barbara. I played basketball in high school and was named Most Inspirational Player.

After graduating from high school, I attended BYU. I had a hard time adjusting to the snow and cold winters, but I had the time of my life living in Deseret Towers, Centennial Apartments, and Riviera Apartments.

While attending BYU, I met my sweetheart, Del, who was born and raised in a rural area of Colorado. We were married in 1985, after my junior year at BYU. I graduated from BYU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications.

Shortly after graduation, my first child, a son, was born while we lived in Utah. My daughter was born two years later.

We then moved to New Mexico for five years before moving out to rural Colorado. We've now been blessed with ten wildly creative children whose talents amaze me and bless my life.

Besides kids, we've also raised cows, horses, rabbits, goats, and sheep. We currently have a small herd of goats and a llama we named Tina (yes, my children have watched Napoleon Dynamite too many times!).

I love living in the country with my big family. I love watching my kids play together, have fun, and develop their talents. We have a performance in front of our fireplace almost every night where our kids sing, do cheers, or act out a play they've written. I love the peace and quiet (okay, maybe quiet isn't quite the word) of the country and having the opportunity to raise animals.

With all the activities, school events, and utter chaos that sometimes rains down upon us, I have to work hard to find time to write. But, I've discovered that because it's important to me, I've found ways to work it in. I've had stories published in the Friend, Story Friends, Our Little Friend, and Stories for Children. City-raised, culture-loving, impoverished Ruth sought security and a home when she agreed to marry Harlan Reynolds. When the couple moved to Harlan's new job at the Diamond E ranch, Ruth found the land as bleak as her marriage. She took her car and ran away to Las Cruces, but didn't make it far before she found herself stuck in a deep and isolated arroyo. Enter Heck Benham, Diamond E cowhand, who after a spectacular display of horse-handling rescued the lady. They both felt the spark, and here, the story takes off.

In her dedication of the book to her mother, author Liz Adair explains the novel is a fictionalized account of a long secret family story: an uncle fell in love and ran away with a married woman in that long ago New Mexico.

The story Adair tells is a love story, but it is also one of struggle. Struggles with the land, the hard times, and, mostly, two very different people who, in spite of their love, want very different things.

Heck is content with his life, his horses, his home, however modest, and his (eventual) wife. Ruth longs for what she had--and more. More culture, more money, more people. Through the years, they stay together, sometimes one yielding, sometimes the other.

Adair spins a fascinating and easy to read story. All of her characters, not only Heck and Ruth, ring true. Moreover, she has a fine eye and ear for both the land and the times. I grew up in the country not far from the setting of this story, and, like Adair, I grew up hearing stories of the Great Depression. She has skillfully captured both.

This is a story to enjoy, but also one to learn from.

Read all 11 Reviews

Perfect Paperback: 335 pages
Publisher: Inglestone Publishing; 1st edition (January 30, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0977881466
ISBN-13: 978-0977881468
Product Dimensions: 8.9 x 6 x 1 inches
Shipping Weight: 1 pounds (View shipping rates and policies)
Average Customer Review: 4.7 out of 5 stars
Amazon.com Sales Rank: #1,131,207 in Books

Purchase Counting the Cost

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783129098248200920.post-71552210896644265802009-11-13T19:00:00.000-07:002009-11-13T21:01:14.818-07:00Liz Adair Biography
Published Works: Co-editor of Lucy Shook's Letters from Afghanistan; and Author of the Spider Latham Mysteries series, The Mist of Quarry Harbor, and Counting the Cost.

Bio: Liz has raised seven children in Ferndale, Washington with her husband Derrill Adair, who works in construction management. Christmas has become so commercialized over the years that the true meaning has so easily been forgotten. This new book reminds us of family traditions, the warmth and comfort of friends and family, and those around us needing a lift. Written with great wisdom to uplift and inspire.

The Santa Letters is a beautiful story about how the lives of Emma Jensen and her children were changed overnight by the death of her husband, William, killed by a hit and run driver. As Christmas Eve approaches, marking the anniversary of his death, she finds herself sinking into a deep depression where nothing can reach her - not her job, not the love of her family, and especially not the season. Her youngest child, McKenna, is the only one who still believes in the magic of Christmas, and in miracles. The stories will have you laughing one minute, then crying the next. Many are touching, and some are outrageous. But in the end, you'll come away with a renewed resolve to hold consistent Family Home Evenings and most of all, it's okay to be creative (like best-selling author, Rachel Ann Nunes), or it's okay to send the kids to their rooms after (like Best of State Educator, Lu Ann Staheli). And sometimes FHE can be used for simple teaching moments, such as encouraging the children to flush the toilet (as told by Josi S. Kilpack, well-known mystery writer).

Stories are shared by Alan Osmond, Carol Lynn Pearson, Annette Lyon, Bruce Summerhays, Susan Easton Black, GG Vandagriff, and Jennie Hansen to name a few.

I echo George Dyer's (international opera singer) sentiment, "After reading the first few stories in this book I let out a sigh of relief and a chuckle as I realized my family wasn't so dysfunctional when it came to family home evening experiences after all!"

Genre: Fiction - Religious

See all 6 Reviews

Paperback: 176 pages
Publisher: Cedar Fort, Inc. She grew up in Cheshire, England. After marrying Bob Bradshaw, she lived in Daventry, Leiston, Southport, Tamworth and Sutton Coldfield. The Bradshaws currently live in the USA and have four children, David, Linda, Jeff and Pete; and many grandchildren.

Anne's hobbies include family, walking, computers, herbal gardening, aromatherapy, photography, and genealogy.

"I've had some great experiences researching ancestors," she says. "I descend from people named Tozer, Barclay, Styles, Pattison, Guppy, Whall, Burgess, Tibbs, Minter, Scarfe, Godfrey, and Short, to name a few. The singer, Phil Collins, is in there too, on the Tozer line. He's my Dad's cousin's son."

While living in England, Anne sent articles and stories about British youth to the Church magazine, The New Era, a high quality glossy magazine with worldwide circulation. She also contributed Ensign British Isles Insert articles about members from the United Kingdom. Since living in America, Anne has authored four published books; co-authored two screenplays and two non-fiction books; and written countless articles.

"Writing is an exciting and satisfying experience," Anne says, "and is something I've wanted to do since childhood. I've kept a box of ideas and jottings for a long time, knowing one day they would get into books. And they did."

Anne's favorite things include walking in the rain on fresh cut grass; watching crashing waves before a storm; and sitting by a log fire on frosty winter nights.

Anne dislikes clusters of empty, tangled coat hangers that refuse to disengage; loud, fast-spoken TV ads; and anything cruel, unkind, unjust, or prejudiced.

Below are Nadine Drommond and Carolyn Croxton, who introduced The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints into Anne's life in 1964.

Anne's Website

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-783129098248200920.post-89989623510147211932009-11-13T18:19:00.002-07:002009-11-14T15:55:26.328-07:00Forged in the Refiner's Fire by Candace E.
